THE REVIEW by Robin Moroney for Gamers Today
The N64's use of a cartridge and not a CD has made the console a dry ground for role-playing games, so Ogre Battle 64 comes as something of a late-minute shower of rain. "It's time to stand up and cheer, RPG fans," said IGN. Ogre Battle tells the story of "a kingdom that has been betrayed by its king so that his throne and the social elite of the country will remain safe," according to Gamespot. "Players will suffer betrayal, weave their way through a tapestry of lies and fight for the freedom of the oppressed," said Daily Radar.
They will do this by maneuvering a unit of creatures through the land, arranging them in a strategically appropriate formation (some characters are best placed in the back, others in the front), and battling, amongst other things, "13 types of dragons." "Players dive into a sea of options" in this game, according to Daily Radar. Ogre Battle proves to be "a very enjoyable experience for any RPG gamer willing to venture into the realm of challenging strategy and micromanagement," said Gamespot.
